First in the Celydon Saga, the novel starts the story of the young heroine, Emily, who has the nickname "Danger Girl." Much to her disgust, she finds herself in the middle of a Cinderella story. Everything she was raised to believe has consisted of lies and half-truths. In the land of Prydein and its empire, Druids are the guardians of Celtic culture and advisors of Queens and Kings. The Patrician class forms the highest aristocracy, and the Equestrian class the gentry and ruling class that fills the ranks of the imperial army, navy, and air corps.
Britannia may rule the waves and the clouds, but in the town of Nether Poppleton, nestled in the Yorkshire Dales, it is the University of Celydon and its preparatory school, Four Hallows Academy, that forms the center of Emily's world. When inexplicable things start happening at Marbly Manor, Emily gets blamed and it is up to her, with her cousins, to solve a mystery that turns out to be about Emily herself.
Ironically, it is being left behind during the summer holiday with her potty neighbor Sir Brian Botany and his astonishing steam carriage that leads Emily to discover the secret kept from her for all of her fourteen years A frightening grandmother and her connection to the noble and druidical House of Glass.
The Celydon Saga continues with "First Term at Four Hallows," and "The Alchemist's Secret."
House of Glass Book 1 of the Celydon Saga eBook James Maertens
The House of Glass is the 1st book in a new YA+ fantasy series reminiscent of Harry Potter and Cinderella. It takes place in a Celtic-British, myth-legend-folklore setting and in an alternative modern world with a touch of Steampunk. The protagonist, Emily, is like HP in having emerging, untrained magical abilities and is an orphan living with relatives who dislike Druid magical humans for reasons clarified somewhat in this author's first novel. Her real parents were deceased adepts. Though this sounds familiar it differentiates from HP by having a literary bent, by plot, by characters, by the author's obvious immersion in Celtic and Druidic lore and by surprisingly mixed genres. The novel is only superficially derivative. I am reminded of the works of Juliet Marillier. The prose and style are obviously written by an experienced, trained author. It flows smoothly and clearly without the bumps and ruts that make so many self-published novels a hassle to read. It feels as if it were professionally edited. Most important it is a fun read. You will desire more.
What I also liked about House of Glass was its many, many historical, mythic,Celtic, British, geographic... 'allusions', facts and subtle jokes for the au courant. I spent much time checking names, places and concepts on Google and Wikipedia to determine what or who was real or fictional. There is a mix, but more was real than expected. As such I discovered new pearls. It will be a treat for those of you who like finding hidden gems.
Highly recommended!

House of Glass Book 1 of the Celydon Saga eBook James Maertens Reviews
The characters are full of life and enjoyable and the story line is fascinating. A very well spun tale and I am looking forward to more Emily Glass and her adventures! The book will appeal to adults as well as young adults. 5 stars
I did get a little teary eyed remembering my childhood friends. But there was one spectacular event in the book that really impressed me. I am a sci-fi fan of the old hardware school and this piece was delicious!! I will say no more--don't want to give it away!
Delightful story of a lively, mischievous young girl Emily. I enjoyed the unfolding of her story as she, at age 13 begins to learn more about herself.
Since infancy she has lived with the Birch family; uncle, aunt and cousins. She has many adventures with cousin Sabrina and they love each other dearly. An older cousin, Stephanie, is amazed with Emily because of her lively spirit and because she is not like the other Birch's in looks or behavior. As the story unfolds we learn along with Emily, from some people she meets at a party that she is different from the Birch's and that her last name is Glass. Major Birch and his wife decide that Emily needs a more disciplined education than she would get at the local school, sent her to a very strict girls school in France. She is rescued from this fate in a mysterious way!
