This book contains a selection from my writings on Art extending over a period of twenty years. Some essays have never before been published in England; and I have also added a good deal of new matter and made slight corrections throughout. In the laborious work of hunting up lost and forgotten publications, and in the work of selection, revision, and arrangement I owe everything to Mr. R. R. Tatlock's devoted and patient labour.

This is a very good book to read if you are interested in WWII and the holocaust. This is told by a Russian Orthodox girl who with her family fled Russia as WWII was starting. The diaries were not published until after Nonna has passed away, this was her wish. She had kept all of her secrets from her family until her golden years. She then felt it should be told so that this doesn't happen again.

She gives a beautiful detailed story of her early childhood in Russia with horse drawn sleighs and and a grandma who has a 37 room great house in addition to many cottages. The family is quite wealthy, that being said they were still in danger when Hitler invades Russia. It is never quite known if her father may have been Jewish but he was the one in the most danger.

Nonna and her mother go on a voluntary work detail from Russia to Germany to work in factories. What they end up in is cattle cars and going to camps that were work (concentration) camps. They faired only very slightly better than the Jews. All through the book Nonna has a had time understanding why the Jews are being treated this way. I cannot blame her I still don't get it.
Nonna and her mother suffer greatly.

There are many different places her family travels to stay alive during the war. It is a non stop page turner. It is mixed with so many fond memories that it makes the hard times not bring you totally down. Don't get me wrong your heart will break for Nonna and all the people who suffered, but you will so enjoy the good memories that Nonna had to carry her through.

I highly recommend this book, especially if you have not read much about the holocaust. This would be good for middle school and up. The language is not bad and the very brutal violence that takes place during this time is kept brief.

I very much enjoyed the book and I thank Nonna's family for sharing. It also has notes from her children and also a timeline of her life at the end that also has general events in Russia which I found quite interesting.
I chose this book because I love true history! I felt like I was with Nonna throughout this entire book! At times she brought me back to my own childhood in New England! When we visited with my own mothers farm after a good snowfall! My uncles would hitch some horses to the family sleigh , we would all bundle up get big blankets & ride all around the little town & fields of Dracut, Mass! I used to love those nights, with my Mom's family! Nonna brought me right back to my favorite childhood memories!
This was a story of the life a young girl who saw it all fall apart as the Communist Russian government changed her early life of plenty to one of hardship. Many of her family members lost their lives as the Germans under Adolf Hitler invaded Russia and all were affected, not only the Jews. Nonna kept diaries and journaled about all these events through her growing years. After American Soldiers ended WWI, she had no family left, so pursued the dream of her father and moved to America. She met her future husband shortly after arriving, and she kept everything that happened during her early life deep inside. After about forty years, she finally decided to share her early life and the story of the Holocaust with her beloved husband. She opened her journals and dictated to him in English the events she had recorded, and he typed her words. They were married for fifty-three years when she died, and upon her death her family decided to publish this story.
I was horrified at her details. The Holocaust was real. The book tells the story in chronological order, but there are a few spots that seemed repetitious, but considering the personal information shared, I believe Nonna Bannister did an excellent job of transcribing it from the eight languages she had written it in.
The book gives many details; some of it might not be suitable for young children, but it should be read by all.
This is a very tragic yet beautiful story. Nonna recalls happy times in her childhood before everything changed for her. It was heartwarming to read about the times she shared with her family, times she greatly treasure throughout her life. It was heartbreaking to then read of all the horrors her and her family faced during World War II. Her story is interesting because she wasn’t in a concentration camp, but rather was a slave laborer - still essentially improsoned, still witnessing truly awful things, but a bit of a different aspect that was interesting. She also tells of how she rebuilt her life after all the struggle. This was heartbreaking and also inspiring. Truly wonderful book.
I hope and pray that Nona found her peace and finally reunited with her lost family. Please read and share this story. And to the German government shame on you. After 50 years delay, you still sent Nona a check for the same amount as it was intended to be issued immediately after the war. Your ancestors destroyed her entire family, killed and burned her loved ones, took her life away and still you did not have the decency to at least adjust the check amount for the inflation. Instead of giving her that and additional money as a sign of apology for everything you have caused to Nona, you shamelessly sent her your miserable check 5 decades later. You are no different than your Nazi bloodlines.
